But in the case of the 22nd Council District race, where incumbent Councilman Peter Vallone Jr. is running against Green Party candidate Lynee Serpe, political know-how wins the day.
Vallone has represented the 22nd District- it includes Astoria, Long Island City, parts of Jackson Heights, Rikers, Randalls and Wards Islands- since 2002. He knows how to get things done inside the City Council, which is why the Long Island City/Astoria Journal is endorsing him for council.
And though we disagree very strongly with the term limits extension that allowed elected officials like Vallone to run for a third term, Vallone remains the right choice.
He has made an impact at City Hall as chair of the Public Safety Committee, and in his district as a champion of graffiti removal. Vallone has also been a strong advocate for education and safer streets.
Serpe’s surprisingly strong third party candidacy made this a difficult choice. Serpe is attuned to the district’s many issues, and has a raft of innovative public policies to improve city life.
On the environment especially, Serpe- a leading green activist for years- holds a clear edge. In four years she will make a very formidable force to beat in another run for office.
Right now, however, and moving forward through the recession, Vallone’s time at City Hall will prove invaluable.
