The transportation company CSX has offered to donate land for an alternative dog run site in Middle Village, the Queens Ledger has learned.

In informal talks with Councilwoman Elizabeth Crowley’s office, Lydon Sleeper, Crowley’s chief of staff, said CSX officials agreed to offer a parcel of company-owned land at the end of 57th Road - where the road dead ends with 78th Street - to the city Parks Department for use as a dog run.

“CSX would be open to figuring out a way to arrange a dog run,” Sleeper said, adding that the company proposed the idea without being prompted to first.

A CSX spokesperson did not return calls confirming this.

The site is an alternative to a divisive proposal by the Juniper Park Dog Owners Association to place the dog run in Juniper Valley Park.

At Community Board 5’s November meeting, District Manager Gary Giordano made it clear that proposal has little support among members of the community board.

Kathy Masi, the board’s Parks Committee co-chair, who has worked on the issue for months, said the alternative site makes sense, assuming dog owners calling for their own space accept the offer.

Masi said an expensive dog run in Juniper Valley Park, one that could cost as much as $750,000, is less feasible given the city’s fiscal troubles.

“In today’s climate it’s a lot of money,” said Masi.

She disputed claims made by members of the dog owner association that CB5 has not worked diligently to find a solution, and noted that the association’s insistence on locating the dog run in the park itself has been the real cause for delay.

“That’s the real stumbling block,” Masi said. “It isn’t the community - it’s really the dog run people who have dug their heels in.”

Members of the dog owners association are expected to respond formally to the proposed alternative site at CB5’s next meeting on December 9.
