Five winners were presented with a check and a certificate recognizing them for their accomplishment, though only two were present to accept the honors.
“I’m happy to win,” said P.S. 174 5th grader Justin Blakemore, a winner of the poster contest. “Don’t drink when you drive because you’re going to end up falling asleep and crashing.”
Eighth grader Niko Lowery of P.S. 146 was also a contest winner. A fatal car crash in which a woman was killed by a drunk driver recently happened around the corner from his house. In his poster, he drew the scene as he recalled it.
“It really hit me hard. It was a few days before Thanksgiving, so that was the worst part,” said Lowery. “Don’t drink and drive. What would the victim of the family feel?”
The 112th Precinct Community Council hosts a contest every year with the same theme, but this year participants were asked to create a poster instead of writing an essay.
“The main purpose of this is to get the students to be creative and think about why they should not be doing drugs or driving drunk or getting in a car with a drunk driver,” said Heidi Chain, president of the community council. “We hope we’re affecting their behavior.”
