Review: Edible Queens

Queens’ premiere food magazine, Edible Queens, just released its second issue, and although it’s a very new publication, it’s quickly gaining traction in both the Queens community and in the world of foodies.

In its first couple of issues, Edible Queens impressed heavily by snagging face-time with culinary icons Anthony Bourdain and Lidia Bastianich. Yes, Anthony Bourdain of the Travel Channel’s No Reservations was in Flushing! Certainly I never realized you can get live octopus right here in Flushing, and I’ve been a Flushing resident all my life. But it’s really no surprise to anyone that you can get good seafood, noodles and dumplings in Flushing. I was kind of hoping for something more exotic, but I doubt anything else the author chose would have shocked Bourdain anyway.

The photographs in the magazine are absolutely amazing. Just looking at the colorful photos of Indian snacks and French pastries in the Winter 2009 issue had my mouth watering. When it comes to food that you’ve never eaten, appearances are everything! Heart-shaped ravioli from Durso’s Pasta and Ravioli Company? They look even cuter than they sound.

There are even recipes that you can try out yourself. You can’t eat out every single day, you’ll go broke! Instead, make your own two tomato casserole, “eight jewel rice” and green apple babycakes. And hey, if you fail miserably, you can still grab a bite at any of the featured eateries, most of them very reasonably priced.

One small concern I raise is how the magazine is going to continue outdoing itself. With in-depth customer reviews of restaurants now available to anyone with Internet access (think Yelp!), it might prove to be a bit of a challenge.

All in all, however, Edible Queens is off to a good start teaching readers how to eat like kings in Queens.
