DOT is conducting a two-phase study to explore alternative truck routes in the area. The study is also investigating problem intersections, road configurations and the impact of commercial traffic on local streets, according to the transportation department.
Residents in the area have long complained that trucks clog Grand Avenue and even take to residential side streets on their way through the neighborhood or to and from Maspeth's Industrial Business Zone. Concerns at community boards have risen ever since Waste Management unveiled a plan to increase truck traffic at its Review Avenue facility.
The DOT's study area is bounded by the Grand Avenue, the Long Island Expressway (I-495) and the Brooklyn Queens Expressway (I-278).
The public discussion will take place on Tuesday, January 26 at 7 p.m. at Martin Luther High School, which is located at 60-02 Maspeth Avenue. For additional information contact DOT at 718-286-0886.
