For the 83rd year, the Daily News Golden Gloves have returned to New York City. The Golden Gloves, sponsored by the Daily News, is New York’s premier amateur boxing tournament, features boxers from all over country slugging it out for a chance to compete at the WaMu Theater at Madison Square Garden on March 25 and 26.
Opening night at the Gloves, held Wednesday, January 20 at B.B. King’s Bar & Grill in midtown Manhatta, was an action packed night, with exciting fights ling the card.
Opening the tournament was a 141-pound open bout that featured Carlos Teron from Cops N Kids gym against Tyrone James of Bronxchester BC. The fight whipped the crowd’s energy into a frenzy, but Teron was too much for James, winning the decision.
After the fight, Teron spoke about opening up the tournament.
“It was a great experience,” Teron said, “I wanted to start off the Golden Gloves right.”
When asked about his fight, Teron said that he knew James, who he had fought against when he was younger, was finished when he saw the fighter drop his hands.
“I knew he was done when I saw him drop his hands. My corner just keep fighting, keep punching, straight one-two and we’ll get him.”
Other highlights of the night included a short bout between Shemuel Pagan and Tyrell White, in which Pagan won with a T.K.O. with only 1:29 left in the first round.
Another strong highlight fight included the matchup between Lasheem Richardson and Pedro Sosa. This was a one-sided fight as Sosa, a 2009 Golden Gloves champion, knocked down Richardson twice in the second round en route to a victory.
If you’re looking to catch some boxing action, the Golden Gloves will head into Brooklyn this week, stopping at Bishop Kearney High School in Brooklyn on Friday, January 29 at 7:30 pm.
