If Grover Cleveland stays open it might have a new school for a neighbor.

The School Construction Authority (SCA) has agreed to purchase the closed-down Rite Aid site on Metropolitan Avenue and Tonsor Street, down the block from Grover Cleveland High School.

Marge Feinberg, an Education Department spokesperson, confirmed the agreement. She declined to say how much the site would cost.

“We have reached an agreement to purchase the property,” Feinberg said.

Few details on the project have been released. It appears the city is planning to build a 600-seat primary school on the site. The school would primarily serve students from Ridgewood and Middle Village, as well as neighboring Maspeth. The project must be approved by the City Council.

Councilwoman Elizabeth Crowley said the site is just one of several being considered for new schools in the area.

“I am pleased that the School Construction Authority is looking at locations to build schools within our community,” Crowley said. “I will continue to work with the DOE, the SCA and the community to ensure this process is done with the best interests of the surrounding neighborhoods and for our future generations.”

Community Board 5 will is holding a hearing on the project at its February 24 meeting. The meeting will take place at 7 p.m. at Grover Cleveland High School.
