The popular circus show announced last week that their special event - “The Coney Island Illuscination!” - will premier June 17 in an air-conditioned tent on the corner of Surf Avenue and West 21st Street.
"Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey is honored by the City of New York’s heartfelt, continued embrace to include America’s Living National Treasure as a member of the Coney Island summer community," said Stephen Yaros, vice president for the Northeast Region of Feld Entertainment.
Circus officials report that the 2009 premiere drew over 160,000 people, while generating over $13 million in revenue for the Coney Island area and a significant amount of public exposure for the area.
Barnum & Bailey’s also tempts to engage the community by hiring a predominately local crew. Over 300 New Yorkers worked with the crew last summer, 90 percent of which came from the Coney Island area. Circus officials say they plan to repeat that effort.
“The circus is a great boost for this neighborhood faced with high unemployment rates," said NYCEDC President Seth Pinsky. "This summer, in addition to their pledge to continue local hiring, the return of Ringling Bros. will contribute to the economic revitalization underway in the neighborhood."
The show will run on Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays from June 17 through September 6. Tickets, which start at $10, go on sale Thursday, April 29.
Circus fans will also have an opportunity to see the Showboat Shazzam, formerly known as CIRCUSundays. One of New York’s most acclaimed “circuses at seas” will launch its 14th season this June.
Shows will take place at the Waterfront Museum & Showboat Barge in Red Hook, Brooklyn. The group will perform two shows daily on June 6, 13, 20, and 27 at 1 and 4 p.m. Tickets are available in advance, and are $16 for adults and 412 for kids.
