A new restaurant’s come to town, and judging by the name of it, it’s going to be tasty.

Local diner Good Eats opened on Wednesday after nine months of renovations and 40 years of serving the Maspeth community as Newport Restaurant.

“We spent a lot of sleepless nights putting this together, but we’re confident everybody’s going to come and enjoy,” said Maria Kolombos, who owns the restaurant with her husband John.

The couple hoped to renovate when they purchased Newport Restaurant five years earlier, but a fire at their other restaurant in Manhattan forced them to put the plans on hold. The delay gave them extra time to dream up the perfect design for their modern style diner.

“I wanted something subtle,” said Kolombos, “soft on the eyes and relaxing.”

Good Eats boasts colorful textured walls, full-length windows, tiled tabletops, and a no-nonsense open kitchen.

“My staff calls me Eagle Eye because I watch every plate that comes out of my kitchen,” said Kolombos. “I won’t give something to someone else unless I like it.”

Despite the uncertainty presented by the economy, she is confident that they will do well because people still need to eat, but they are looking for value.

“Times are tough,” she said. “When someone’s paying for something, they have to get their money’s worth.”

Not to mention how reasonable the prices are. Kolombos said she charges less than the average diner without skimping on portion size. Everything on the menu costs less than $20, even for dinner. Kolombos swears by her salads, lasagna, homemade burgers, and fresh breakfasts.

“We make huge, fluffy omelettes in the pan and we use our own homemade buttermilk pancake batter,” said Kolombos.

The Kolomboses pride themselves on treating their staff like family. When the restaurant was closed for nearly a year, their employees went with them to the Manhattan restaurant and kept their jobs throughout the renovation. Kolombos hopes that her loyal customers, as well as new ones, will become part of the extended family.

“Everyone is welcome,” she said. “We invite you to come enjoy some good eats. As our logo says, ‘Good eats, good food, good life.’”

“We can’t wait to see everybody!” added John Kolombos.

Good Eats is located at 69-32 Grand Avenue in Maspeth.
