Watch out Long Island City, there’s a new artsy neighborhood in Queens.

Councilman Daniel Dromm is sponsoring a month-long Jackson Heights arts initiative to encouraging local residents and visitors to patronize local businesses, eat at local restaurants, and support local artists.

“Jackson Heights has long been home to a diverse array of talented artists, writers, actors and musicians,” said Dromm. “The broad range of arts and culture we have here have made this a unique neighborhood to eat, live, work and shop.”

June in Jackson Heights is a showcase of musical performances, art exhibitions and installations, literature readings, family-friendly activities and a Jackson Heights Restaurant Week. At the 37th Avenue Art Gallery, local merchants will host the work of local artists from June 10 to June 30.

“The reason I opened my coffee shop, Espresso 77, here is because I love this neighborhood and as an artist myself, I wanted to give other artists an opportunity to showcase their work in my shop,” said owner Afzail Hossein, a Jackson Heights resident.

June in Jackson Heights kicked off with with the opening reception for “Illumination” by Laura Fayer and Sandra Mack-Valencia on the cultural exchange they share as Jackson Heights neighbors and the 18th annual Queens Pride Parade, a celebration of the LGBT community in Queens.

As part of the upcoming Queens Art Express, a program of the Queens Council on the Arts, there will be a reading by the contemporary Asian-American voices of Jackson Heights in The Jackson Diner, a landmark Indian eatery in the neighborhood, on June 12 at 6 p.m.

The Queens Media Arts Development is inviting the NYC community to BABEL, an exhibition at 86-08 37th Avenue that explores the relationship of language and visual arts. There will be an array of disciplines presented throughout June from photography, paintings, and illustrations, to new media. BABEL will establish connections between the written word and the recent conclave explosions of immigrants throughout the city.

“Having a full exhibition in the scope of BABEL is timely as it reflects the diversity of cultures in Jackson Heights,” said Queens Media Arts Development Director Hector Cononge, “and brings the talent of local artist together to one space to celebrate language and its visual incarnations and representations."

For the month-long program, organizers have also invited restaurant owners to take part in Jackson Heights Restaurant Week from June 20 through June 26. The participating restaurants will offer specially priced menus for residents and visitors to sample cuisines from around the world.

“June in Jackson Heights is a great way for artists and businesses to work together to strengthen our community,” said Consuelo Quitno, owner of Natives restaurant, which is participating in the event.

“June is just the beginning, but our hope is that this continues year-round,” added Hossein, the coffee shop owner.
