“Knowing that people have a certain amount of time for lunch, we’re committed to providing them with food quickly,” said NYBD co-owner Louis Selmat, a retired NYPD sergeant, “that is also high quality.”
So what’s good at NYBD? Plenty, but the burgers are a specialty, as is indicated by the name.
“We have a six-ounce, never frozen burger ground with steak trimmings freshly delivered from our butcher,” said Selmat. “We also serve homemade French fries and sweet potato fries, fresh cut and fried to order.”
If you're doubtful, try it out and take advantage of the lunch special, served from 11 a.m. To 3 p.m., which allows you to get any sandwich (gyros, burgers, triple deckers, etc.), fries and a soda for $7. There is also a breakfast special that includes an omelette, juice and coffee for $6.
“We wanted a place where people could eat good food at a reasonable price,” said Selmat. “We've had nothing but positive reviews since we opened.”
He pointed out that NYBD is the only diner serving residents on the south side of the Long Island Expressway going towards Brooklyn. The ample street parking and the ten parking spaces provide customers with a hassle-free dining experience.
He and his business partner, Maria Sartzetakis, have each owned their own restaurant in Park Slope, but the move to Maspeth was a welcome change. Selmat said that as a civil servant for over two decades, he wanted to serve the community because it is home to many current and retired civil servants and their families.
“Moving forward, we’re confident we’re here to stay,” said Selmat, “that our business will grow and our customers will leave happy and full.”
New York Burger Diner is located at 65-35 Grand Avenue in Maspeth.
