Sick of the traffic-choked situation in Flushing? So is the Department of Transportation (DOT).

At a meeting at Flushing Town Hall last Tuesday, Queens Borough Commissioner Maura McCarthy announced a new Downtown Flushing Traffic Plan aimed to address bottle-necks and congestion, provide more pedestrian space and improve overall safety.

The proposed improvements will prohibit all left turns from westbound Northern Boulevard to southbound Main Street except for buses; northbound left turns from Main Street onto westbound 37th Avenue except for buses; left turns from northbound Union Street to westbound Northern Boulevard; and all turns from Main Street onto Roosevelt Avenue.

“No Standing Any Time” signage will be posted at the corners of Main Street at 37th Avenue and Main Street at 38th Avenue. There will be curb extensions at the northwest and southeast corners of Main Street and Roosevelt Avenue, as well as at the northwest corner of Union Street and Northern Boulevard.

“We want to implement this plan now when it’s lower traffic during the summer instead of when kids go back to school and it’s chaos,” said McCarthy. “It gives residents time to get used to it.”

DOT is meeting with the MTA to discuss the impacts of the traffic changes. An announcement will be made on July 18.

“Parking’s a whole different issue,” said McCarthy, “but if traffic flows better, it will be better for both pedestrians and drivers.”
