Well, summer is here! Hot, high temperatures and cloudless skies - “let the sun shine!” as they sang in the Broadway show Hair.

I have to say, I love the summer season. The warm sun on your skin feels so good; it even feels healing. But be careful, for the sun can do damage and harm, so sunning should be done in moderation and for short lengths of time and with a good sunscreen lotion.

As you walk along our Woodhaven’s Jamaica Avenue, you see all the many stores and businesses with their vast variety of goods and services. Especially now with the gas prices so high, shopping locally saves you a lot of money.

As I have always said, why go to impersonal malls with their few salespersons and “help yourself” attitudes. Shop locally in your hometown at the stores and businesses that support your community organizations and contribute towards our Woodhaven Business Improvement District (WBID).

Every store or business on our Woodhaven’s Jamaica Avenue from Dexter Court to 100th Street cares enough to contribute toward our Woodhaven Business Improvement District. This money is used to pay for the cleaning of our sidewalks, removing graffiti vandalism, promotions, and beautification.

Have you noticed our very bright street lights on Woodhaven’s Jamaica Avenue? That’s the WBID! If you see security officers walking our avenue or in cars during promotional events or near our banks at certain times of the month, that’s the WBID! And if you see graffiti vandalism and then you don’t, that’s the WBID! All this is to improve the atmosphere for your shopping or dining on your local commercial strip in our Woodhaven.

So save gas, everything you need is right here on your 25-block WBID. Enjoy your clean, 98 percent graffiti vandalism-free, safe award-winning Woodhaven Business Improvement District – the only Business Improvement District in Southeast Queens besides three in Jamaica.

Every year the New York City Police Department, our local 102nd Police Precinct, and our 102nd Precinct Community Council sponsor a National Night Out Against Crime. Our 2010 National Night Out Against Crime will be on Tuesday, August 3, from 7 to 9 p.m., at the Buddy Memorial on Park Lane South and Myrtle Avenue.

Join us for an enjoyable evening to promote community spirit. Free food and refreshments, gifts, live music, and entertainment. Increase awareness and strengthen police-community relations. NYPD Mounted, NYPD Canine, NYPD Emergency Services, NYPD Motorcycles and Police Recruitment Officers will be in attendance. All are invited. For more information, call me, the 102nd Precinct Community Council president, at (718) 805-0202 or Community Affairs Police Officer McCoy or Detective Agunzo at the 102nd Precinct at (718) 805-3215.

Our 102nd Precinct covers Woodhaven, Richmond Hill, Ozone Park and Kew Gardens. The telephone number at the 102nd Precinct is (718) 805-3200. Emergencies and suspicious persons ringing door bells or walking into driveways, dial 911. Our Commanding Officer at the 102nd Precinct is Captain Armando DeLeon. He and his Police Officers work very hard to keep us secure in our homes, our streets and your WBID’s Jamaica Avenue. Crime is down in our precinct. Also, a safety tip: light up your backyards and leave your porch lights on - criminals hate lights.

Congratulations to SUNY College of Technology at Delhi Dean’s List, Avindra Ramnarain; Honors and Recognition at SUNY New Paltz, Kristin Solano; and on his New York Army National Guard re-enlistment, Sgt. Wellington Jimenez – all of Woodhaven. You make us proud.

Fly your American flags proudly above all others in support of our troops and our country. Our America is at war, never forget and never again. May God bless our little Woodhaven, and may God bless America.
