The Parks Department, private contractors and volunteers should be commended for the good job they did to restore Juniper Valley park and surrounding areas devastated by the storm that wreaked havoc through Brooklyn and Queens.
Parts of Middle Village and Forest Hills were particularly hard hit, with massive trees ripped out of the ground onto cars and homes. Crews worked 12-hour shifts doing very dangerous work with some streets impassable and electrical and phone lines down everywhere.
I was amazed to see Juniper Park looking so good only a few weeks after the storm. The park has so many big, beautiful trees that if you didn't know there were so many trees lost, you couldn't tell.
When I think of the power and speed of the storm and the time of the day that it came, when lots of people were in the park and on the streets, we must be thankful the loss of life wasn't worse than it was.
